An Illinois woman was sentenced to 28 months in prison and ordered to pay $405,867 in restitution to the IRS after pleading guilty in a federal tax case.
Yvonna Lee, 36, of South Holland, Illinois, had admitted to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
According to court records, Lee engaged in a scheme in which she and others filed fraudulent federal tax returns that generated improper refunds for clients. As part of the scheme, Lee assisted in the preparation of 146 fraudulent tax returns, resulting in a total loss of more than $400,000 to the U.S. government.
