But when it comes to IRS problems, many contractors find that the toughest fix isn’t in a wall—it’s in their wallet. Most construction professionals are self-employed and receive 1099 income. That means you’re responsible for your own income taxes, self-employment taxes, and estimated quarterly payments. And if you don’t keep up? Penalties and interest start piling up like unpaid supplier invoices. Per IRC §6651(a)(1), the Failure to File penalty can reach 25% of the unpaid tax. Add the Failure to Pay penalty (IRC §6651(a)(2)) and daily compounding interest (IRC §6601), and your tax debt can turn into a structural hazard before you know it.
