A newly elected alderman in Chicago owes the Internal Revenue Service $18,450 in unpaid taxes.
Angela Clay won the election to represent the city’s 46th Ward despite having a tax lien filed against her.
In addition, Clay did not disclose that she operated a company that received nearly $42,000 in federal pandemic-related relief funds.
A community organizer and Uptown native, Clay will replace James Cappleman, who is retiring from the City Council after serving three terms.
Clay’s campaign manager told the Chicago Sun-Times that the tax lien was the result of an “honest mistake” and “an-all-too common experience for working-class Chicagoans.”
“Like many other small business owners, Angela faced many obstacles in staying afloat during the pandemic,” said Emily Isaacson.
