Sameerah Marrell was sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison for tax fraud. Marrell was found guilty of cheating the IRS and six state treasuries after filing fraudulent tax refunds totaling more than $27 million in bogus refunds.
Between 2014 and 2022, Marrell and her accomplices defrauded the IRS and the state treasuries of Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland and Minnesota, by filing 122 false and fictitious Income Tax Returns for Estates and Trusts and numerous state income tax returns. They were seeking over $13,690,341 from the IRS and $14,730,365 from the six states, by claiming bogus “refunds” to which neither she nor her accomplices were entitled.
The IRS paid out over $5,539,049, and the states paid out a total of $2,972,588.93, before discovering the fraud.
In addition to the prison sentence, Marrell still owes the IRS and the state treasuries restitution in the amount of $7,979,041.71.
