Minnesota Tax Preparer Pleads Guilty for Not Preparing His Own Taxes

A Minneapolis tax preparer has pleaded guilty to federal tax violations, announced United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

A tax preparer in Minneapolis has pleaded guilty to federal tax violations, according to United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger. Court documents show that Sue Yang, 48, of Circle Pines, operated a tax preparation business in Minneapolis and was a participant in the IRS’s e-file program. However, in 2010, the IRS found that Yang had failed to file a 2009 personal income tax return and owed substantial federal income taxes from 2005 to 2008. Despite being notified by the IRS that his failure to resolve these issues could result in sanctions, including the suspension of his Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) or expulsion from the e-file program, Yang continued to operate as an e-filing tax preparer. From 2012 to 2020, Yang filed over 26,000 tax returns electronically using misappropriated EFINs, resulting in a combined federal tax loss of approximately $214,297. Yang has been charged with one count of filing a false federal income tax return and one count of corruptly impeding and obstructing the administration of the internal revenue laws. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled. The case was investigated by the IRS’s Criminal Investigations division and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][us_image][/vc_column][/vc_row]
