For more than four years, they paid dishwashers cash and did not report income paid to the IRS.
Two Pennsylvania bar owners were charged with willful failure to pay employment taxes.
Stephen Eckler, 68, of Ivyland, Penn., and Robert Yost, 52, of Southampton, Penn., owned the Kopper Kettle Bar and Restaurant in Feasterville, Penn. According to court documents, they did not report $263,340 in cash wages that they paid to dishwasher employees at the bar from March 2012 through at least September 2016.
If convicted, the two bar owners face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain said in a statement, “The defendants’ practice of paying their employees in cash, concealing this from the IRS, and failing to collect and pay federal employment taxes undermines the integrity of the federal income tax system.”
